The skin is the organ of the body which meets and deals with the outside world. A mature skin can, to a certain extent, protect itself. It can, for example, cope with the inhibition of its breathing and excretory functions for many years. This is not the case with a baby’s skin, which is, like the baby itself, without protection, susceptible and vulnerable. The tender, sensitive skin, which can so easily swell and become inflamed and which so readily absorbs, needs to be looked after with special care.

Weleda product formulations take into account the needs of your baby and provide more than just a standard treatment of sensitive skin. The products offer a veritable support to the skin’s natural functioning by contributing to the development of a shield of warmth – necessary for controlling the body’s vital functions.

Out of this understanding of the special needs of baby’s delicate skin and out of the knowledge gained from over seventy years experience working with natural substances, Weleda have developed natural baby products. These preparations are made from carefully selected, gentle, natural ingredients and are manufactured in accordance with the same strict quality standards that are applied to the manufacture of Weleda medicines.

Biodynamically grown Calendula is a key ingredient in all the baby care products. During the formulation of the Calendula Baby Care range, Weleda did not merely take one form of Calendula and use it in all the products, rather different Calendula extracts were produced specific to the use of each particular product. Weleda uses home grown Calendula flowers to produce these extracts.

Calendula flowers are processed immediately after harvesting, which is carried out manually. The flowers are gently dried in a warm air current. Following this, the process of producing the Calendula extracts begins using pure natural oils and specific product-related production processes. Calendula is renowned for its soothing and regenerative qualities and for its cooling properties in cases of irritation.

To select the ingredients for each Calendula Baby Care Product is an art in itself in order to ensure that the various ingredients complement each other. In addition to an extract of Calendula flowers, all the products also contain an extract of Chamomile flowers which, with its gentle properties, complements the action of Calendula. As in all Weleda Body Therapy Products, no artificial preservatives or fragrances are used.

TIPS Awards 2010

Following on from the success of TIPS Awards won during 2009 Weleda has just achieved an amazing record breaking 12 TIPS Awards including ‘Top Brand’ for the third season running! Plus the newly launched Pregnancy Body Oil gained a ‘Must Have’ award in the category Tips-Tested Belly Balms.

As well as winning Best of the Best lotion or cream, as an extra bonus Weleda Baby Calendula Lotion won an additional award for ‘Top Product’ as it was the highest scoring baby skincare product out of the 530 tested.

Mother & Baby Award 2009

Weleda baby won the new gold award. It was great timing, in the year that Weleda’s golden calendula baby oil celebrated its 50th birthday, that this highly respected baby range won yet another accolade and is going from strength to strength.

The range has been awarded Best Skincare Range Mother & Baby Awards. These awards have been established for 17 years and are considered by many to be the Oscars of the baby industry, with over 3,000 testers trying everything from buggies to breast-pumps and reporting on a huge variety of baby brands.

One tester summed up her feedback on Weleda Baby: "This baby range provides an exceptional skincare experience”.

Natural Health and Beauty Awards 2009

Fabulous news, Weleda Baby was awarded 'highly commended' in the category Best Eczema Range in the Natural Health and Beauty Awards 2009. This new category was created to show products most suitable for people with eczema.

This couldn't be better timing, in the same week that a new study was published in the journal of the Royal Society of Medicine showing a 40% rise in eczema in this country in the previous four years - the worst statistic in Europe, affecting an estimated 5.8 million people in England - which researchers are partially attributing to the use of detergents and soaps in other toiletries.

Lifescape Beauty Awards 2008

At the end of 2008 Weleda Baby also won Best Babies’ & Children’s Range in the Lifescape Beauty Awards recognising ethical brands. The magazine’s editor Rajasana Otiende explained: ‘We believe that all of the companies featured in these Awards are ethical in the sense that they think hard about what goes into their products, who produces them and how. They make honourable choices, all the more commendable because they operate in such a competitive industry.’

She continued: ‘Weleda is a clear winner in this category on account of its comprehensive range, which is suitable from birth onward. Weleda Baby is already recommended by 70% of midwives in Germany and understandably so: it’s been dermatologically tested not just on healthy skin, but also on easily-irritated skin that is prone to dermatitis and eczema. This means the range is also great for older children or adults who have particularly sensitive skin.’
