The Weleda Baby range was voted Top Skincare Brand in the highly-respected midwife-tested TIPS awards. Even to be nominated for the TIPS awards, brands need to meet the strict midwife criteria including standards of ethics and naturalness. Products must be free from detergents and artificial additives such as synthetic fragrance, and company policy needs to support breastfeeding and other issues particularly close to midwives’ hearts. As midwife and author Sharon Trotter, the founder of the TIPS independent testing initiative explains:
“Congratulations go to the Weleda Baby range as the overall favourite. A beautifully presented range of products manufactured using only the finest ingredients by a company committed to restoring health and maintaining wellbeing naturally, ethically, safely, without animal experimentation and without damaging the environment”.
Weleda Baby met all the stringent criteria, and in addition to the overall brand award Weleda products additionally received individual awards in various categories. The new Calendula Shampoo & Bodywash won Best of the Best Baby Wash, as the TIPS team reported: Parent testers loved this versatile product. It smells gorgeous, lathers well and produces safe bubbles. Completely natural ingredients backed up by excellent advice online and on pack. An overwhelming ‘thumbs up’ from testers.
Calendula Cream Bath won Best of the Best Baby Bath, receiving an enthusiastic review from TIPS: “This gorgeous cream bath was a welcome change from bubbles. It was easy to dispense, non-greasy and safe for all even the most delicate bodies. Testers commented that it left their skin (parents and children alike) silky smooth whilst also being effective against dry skin conditions. This product was an overwhelming success for bath time with the added bonus of being backed up by a company with ethical and environmentally friendly credentials that are second to none.”
Weleda’s best-selling Calendula Nappy Change Cream won Best Budget Nappy Cream in its category: great news for this everyday essential. Similarly Calendula Lotion also won Best Budget Baby Lotion in its category.
Calendula Oil also won Best Budget Baby Oil demonstrating what fantastic value this oil is for protecting and replenishing dry skin or for baby massage. TIPS’ Sharon Trotter enthused: “Testers found this oil easy to use with a pleasant fragrance.
Based on sweet almond oil with added essential oils of chamomile, lavender, orange and rosemary, this lovely product was non-greasy and great value for money. All products in this wonderful range contain raw materials from the natural world many of which have been grown organically or biodynamically (takes into account not just the seasons but also the rhythms of the planets) to the highest standards using no pesticides. Weleda’s ethical and eco-friendly credentials are also to be applauded.”
Weleda’s Children’s Tooth Gel has won a highly respected Editor’s Choice award coming top in the TIPS midwife-tested award scheme. Testers are all parents with babies or toddlers of varying ages.
• 100% of mums thought both consistency and fragrance was good
• 78% of testers rated the gel easy to use
• 67% of testers said they would definitely recommend it.
Testing prompted encouraging comments from many mums (see below for quotes*) and midwife, author and founder of the TIPS independent testing initiative, Sharon Trotter, enthused:
“Testers were unanimous in their praise for this product. From its subtle minty taste and fluoride-free formulation to its great cleaning power, this is an all-round winner. Weleda Children’s Tooth Gel does not foam, which means that there is no need to spit. This is especially important as babies are unable to spit, and should they swallow some gel, this is completely harmless. Testers were reassured by the eco-friendly credentials of this product.”
Children’s Tooth Gel not only tastes great, but more importantly it contains natural ingredients that are especially good for kids’ teeth. Parents need not worry about children swallowing large amounts of toothpaste as they learn to brush**. There are no hidden nasties - no detergents, no bleaches, no foam boosters or whiteners, no artificial colours, flavours or synthetic additives. And there’s no added fluoride, so if you live in an area with a high fluoride content in your water supply, you don’t have to worry about potential discoloration or mottling of your children’s teeth from dental fluorosis which can be very distressing for children and parents alike.
A key ingredient is organic calendula, used in the Weleda Baby range for its mild, soothing, healing properties. Popular for skincare, it's also great for gums. Weleda grow their calendula biodynamically to ensure the very top quality, using the golden flowers which give the gel it’s sunny colour. The natural gel base is made from especially non-abrasive hydrated silica, thickened with algin obtained from seaweed. Lastly the flavour comes from a child-friendly mix of the purest essential oils, with a hint of spearmint.
What the mum’s said:
“I have struggled to get the boys to clean their teeth as they both dislike most flavours of toothpaste and gels I have tried. From the start they both loved the taste and the tube was very easy for them to handle. As a parent, I feel much safer giving the boys this as it is made from all natural ingredients and I don’t have the worry of where did the colourings come from and what added bits are there that do not need to be there. All in all I found it to be a wonderful product.” .
“It was so reassuring to have a toothpaste that didn’t contain loads of fluoride and other nasties”.
“My 2 yr old daughter really enjoys using this – she hasn’t liked mint toothpaste in the past but she enjoyed the subtle mint and herbal taste of Weleda’s. Another plus point is that it doesn’t foam like most toothpastes which is a pleasant change to a ‘toothpaste face’ after brushing .. as there is no toothpaste residue left in her mouth after brushing.”
“It’s ideal for younger children and babies, who can’t spit – because it is completely harmless if swallowed.”
* * According to a 1995 study by the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, 50% of four to six year olds simply swallow the toothpaste instead of spitting it out.
Weleda baby wins new gold award. It’s great timing, in the year that Weleda’s golden calendula baby oil is celebrating its 50th birthday, that this highly respected baby range has won yet another accolade and is going from strength to strength.
The range has just been awarded Best Skincare Range Mother & Baby Awards. These awards have been established for 17 years and are considered by many to be the Oscars of the baby industry, with over 3,000 testers trying everything from buggies to breast-pumps and reporting on a huge variety of baby brands.
One tester summed up her feedback on Weleda Baby: "This baby range provides an exceptional skincare experience”.
Fabulous news, Weleda Baby has been 'highly commended' in the category Best Eczema Range in the Natural Health and Beauty Awards. This new category was created this year to show products most suitable for people with eczema.
This couldn't be better timing, in the same week that a new study was published in the journal of the Royal Society of Medicine showing a 40% rise in eczema in this country in the past four years - the worst statistic in Europe, now affecting an estimated 5.8 million people in England - which researchers are now at least partially attributing to the use of detergents and soaps in other toiletries.

At the end of 2008 Weleda Baby also won Best Babies’ & Children’s Range in the Lifescape Beauty Awards recognising ethical brands. The magazine’s editor Rajasana Otiende explained: ‘We believe that all of the companies featured in these Awards are ethical in the sense that they think hard about what goes into their products, who produces them and how. They make honourable choices, all the more commendable because they operate in such a competitive industry.’
She continued: ‘Weleda is a clear winner in this category on account of its comprehensive range, which is suitable from birth onward. Weleda Baby is already recommended by 70% of midwives in Germany and understandably so: it’s been dermatologically tested not just on healthy skin, but also on easily-irritated skin that is prone to dermatitis and eczema. This means the range is also great for older children or adults who have particularly sensitive skin.’
