We have very clear standards for our products
• No synthetic preservatives
• No synthetic fragrances
• No synthetic chemicals
• No synthetic anything
When we say ‘all natural’, we mean ‘all natural’.
We aim to use only the purest wild-crafted, organically and Biodynamically cultivated ingredients for our products. Toxins, additives and raw materials from mineral oils simply won’t do.
But natural isn’t enough for us, our ingredients have to be effective too. They have to work with your body’s own ability to heal, restore well-being and impart radiance. So to ensure our ingredients maintain their innate potency, we harvest them quickly, then process them as little as possible, taking excellent care of them along the way.
We feel a certain level of responsibility to our crops the same way we feel a responsibility to you.
And because we believe unwaveringly in cultivating beauty for all creatures, we don’t test our skin care products or their ingredients on animals and neither do our suppliers. Period. No asterisk, no small print.
Environmental Statement
Our latest edition of the Weleda Group Environmental Report is available to download (click on the image). It is produced by Switzerland, Germany and France and details ethical ingredients sourcing, company environmental targets, such as upgrading from conventionally grown plant ingredients to organic cultivation. Weleda also works hard to reduce the amount of water consumed in the gardens, when growing Weleda ingredients, and to minimise and carefully monitor the energy consumption of the Group (which is a growing business) and find ways for potential energy saving.
Weleda UK uses green energy suppliers at its Derbyshire premises for example. See below >
You will see a number of Weleda bodycare products carrying this kitemark. This system was the first stage of a process to find the most appropriate endorsement to prove how ‘natural’ Weleda products really are. The next stage is happening now with the introduction of Natrue.
Natural and organic products you can trust. Natrue is a not-for-profit organisation, which recognises the authenticity of natural and organic products by awarding 3 star ratings of natural, natural & organic and organic. Find out more about NaTrue.
The power of a Weleda product comes from the life force in our natural ingredients. To enhance this life force, we use biodynamic methods in our gardens, rejecting chemical pesticides, fertilizers and GM ingredients, while embracing everything that influences healthy growth. So, we plant, nurture and harvest every seed with love in harmony with the seasons, surrounding plants, insects, birds and even planets. The unique quality of our methods allows us all to thrive within the natural rhythms of our home; the earth. This ecological system does not merely belong to Weleda but is recognized worldwide and for adhering to its strict guidelines endorsed by Demeter Certification.
This international accreditation is awarded where produce has been grown to the highest organic and environmental standards using biodynamic methods, which were developed from Rudolf Steiner’s pioneering lectures in 1924 through which the whole organic movement began.
The Biodynamic Agricultural Association is responsible for the Demeter Certified Trademark in the UK and is part of a worldwide group under the title of Demeter International. The Demeter Certification is fully recognised by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) as an organic certification. Find out more about the Demeter accreditation standards.
Beautiful relationships yield beautiful ingredients
We grow dozens of acres of herbs, flowers and fruits, but it’s not everything we need to cultivate beauty in the world. So we’ve developed partnerships that allow us to source ingredients from both small and large farms, cooperatives and cultivation projects, all while committing to sustainable, fair trade practices.
Could we cultivate every ingredient we need ourselves? Perhaps. But we believe forging relationships with wonderful partners helps us do a lot of good in the world. It enables us to spread the word to other farmers about the benefits of organic and Biodynamic principles and help convert more lands to meet these high standards. Plus our partnerships help promote the wonderful social and environmental impact of fair trade practices. It’s gratifying to know that Weleda is not just creating wonderful beauty products; we’re creating a climate for positive social and ecological change. That’s a beautiful thing in itself.
What is a fair trading partnership?
Fair trade is something we’ve been passionately committed to even before there was a popular buzzword for it.
Essentially, fair trade is an organized social movement by which companies empower small producers and promote sustainability. All of which is just fancy talk for good business. With fair trade practices, we pay a fair price for the crops we need, then guarantee quantities from year to year to help farmers—and the communities around them—thrive. We also help train and educate small farmers, assisting them in converting more farms into Biodynamic or organic ones. The farmers get a living wage, we get better crops, the world gets more sustainable harvesting practices and you get the most effective natural ingredients to help keep you healthy and beautiful. Creating a sustainable planet and beauty for all—makes you feel all good inside, doesn’t it?

Weleda likes to put its money where its mouth is - so in early 2009 we moved to a green energy supplier. Sustainability is like second nature to us, and as the burning of fossil fuels to create electricity is one of the main causes of climate change, we’ve spent considerable time looking for the best way to significantly reduce our carbon footprint.
While we keep energy use to a minimum, we are a manufacturing plant - producing medicines and skincare fresh from our biodynamic crops. So we run automated filling, labelling and packing lines, and have to maintain a constant temperature and air-filtration system to protect product purity.
After much research and talking to various suppliers, we finally settled on a company, which could guarantee a supply of 100% renewable electricity. Our new supplier - Good Energy - offers renewable electricity supplies from wind, water and sunlight. The company owns a wind farm in Delabole, North Cornwall, which currently supplies about 7% of its customers. The rest comes from over 500 small to medium sized independent generators across the UK, and any shortfall is bought at auction.
Those units can’t be delivered specifically to customers, but are supplied to the national grid. That means Good Energy customers directly increase the amount of renewable electricity in the grid’s mix. It also means that even if the wind stops blowing, customers are still supplied with electricity.
To ensure they can match renewable supply with customers, the company has actually turned away a few huge businesses, because their 100% guarantee of never buying electricity from the burning of fossil fuels will not be compromised. They have never, however, turned away domestic consumers and currently have around 25,000 customers.
Good Energy has won an impressive array of awards - in 2008 these included ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Environment’ from the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, the British Renewable Energy Company Award, the Micropower Award for Innovation - and were listed in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies as having the most environmentally-aware employees.
The Wiltshire-based company is fighting hard in a market of dinosaurs, and is keen not only to encourage people to switch to renewable electricity, but also to generate their own. Click here for further information.
Of course, at Weleda we still turn off whatever we can when we leave, and increase energy efficiency wherever possible - but it feels good to know we’re doing an extra bit for the environment when we are plugged in.
