How essential oils influence our wellbeing
Natural fragrances inspire the body and senses
Natural fragrances can influence our emotions and memories. At the same time, they can help us to connect with nature. Weleda has been an expert in natural fragrances for 100 years. Our high-quality fragrance compositions are developed by experienced perfumers at our in-house competence centre.
What’s the difference between essential oils and synthetic fragrances?
Essential oils are the essence of the plant, as the term suggests. These powerful substances are extracted from the blossoms, leaves, fruits, wood, buds and roots. Compared to synthetic fragrance compositions, they are far more complex. For example, natural essential rose oil contains up to 300 different compounds. Synthetic fragrances are usually made from petroleum derivatives, meaning they do not come from living nature. Essential oils, on the other hand, allow you to experience the true nature of the plant.
How do fragrances work?
Smells have a far greater influence on our wellbeing than we realise. They can directly influence our feelings and awaken our memories. In aromatherapy natural cosmetics, fragrances do more than provide the product’s scent – they contribute to its overall holistic benefits. Not only are the various effects that essential oils have on the skin taken into account; how their fragrances impact us emotionally is just as important. They can be energising, soothing, balancing, or grounding. They can stimulate the mind, enhance our sensuality, impart a sense of security or brighten our mood.
100 years of natural fragrance expertise
A plant’s fragrance reveals its inner essence. And so it’s quite understandable that scents have a unique effect on us: they evoke memories and influence our wellbeing. Whether invigorating, harmonising or soothing – many plants contain essential oils that can touch body, mind and soul.
Holistic fragrance development and pure essential oils go hand in hand. We invest a lot of resources in sourcing high-quality, unadulterated fragrance raw materials and we work closely with the people who grow, collect and distil them.
Dr. Leo Zängerle, head of the Weleda Fragrance Competence Centre
People respond particularly well to natural fragrance essences, which can have a more profound impact on our emotional world and benefit us in a holistic way. That is why Weleda has been relying on the natural power of plants since 1921. We have long known that natural fragrances contribute to our products’ effectiveness and people’s wellbeing. By supporting our natural rhythm in rest and activity, they help us to find our inner balance.

Our body wash formulations are biodegradable
Weleda body washes, shampoos and new facial cleansers are biodegradable according to OECD criteria. This is important for skin cleansing products as they go directly into the wastewater when washed off. According to the guidelines of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), a product may be classified as “biodegradable” if the substances and raw materials it contains can be broken down into smaller components by natural processes, such as by bacteria or their enzymes.
